Engine & Powertrain
CO2 emissions are at the core of Engines and Powertrain development through major improvements in efficiency, electronic control, alternative combustion cycles, materials, reduced viscosity oils etc. and also in the treatment of after burning gases and particulates.
Gear boxes have a major role to play in lowering CO2 emissions by utilising lower friction materials, longer gear ratios, or by using state-of-the-art infinitely variable transmission systems.
The End-of-Life, re-use and recycling of engineering materials and components is important not only to reduce the environmental impact but to establish new solutions for the materials utilised in engine and transmission construction.
Research priorities have been identified as :
- Improvement of combustion processes.
- Alternative and combined combustion modes.
- Improvement of emissions control
- Powertrain system downsizing
- Virtual design
- Zero servicing
